There aren’t many 23-year-olds as self-possessed as Tara Lynne Barr. The Southern California-raised actress made a splash in the 2011 film God Bless America as well as in the David Duchovny-starring mini-series Aquarius. She did time on such shows as The Bold and the Beautiful and Joan of Arcadia, among others. But nowhere has she stolen scenes like she has in the Golden Globe-nominated  Hulu show Casual, where she  plays the teenage daughter of a divorced therapist  (Michaela Watkins) who’s  raising her with the help of her ne’er-do-well brother (Tommy Dewey). The world-weary and world-wise pathos Barr brings to her character is remarkable—It’s safe to say that Barr’s character is the most mature of the three leads—and it’s a direct result, as it turns out, to how she was raised.

While this  episode started with Barr discussing her issues with limp handshakes, the conversation soon turned into a passionate tribute to Barr’s family—in particular her mother, who raised her to look people in the eye and offer a firm shake. While this is certainly what makes her astoundingly mature for her age, it’s left her with a surprising hangover: judgment when it comes to how other people were raised, in particular when they have (you guessed it) a limp handshake.

How on earth does this all connect to feminism and sweaty palms? Listen and you shall learn.
