They are all seemingly petty issues that aren’t actually petty at all because underneath them lurks some real stuff. And they’re all discussed on the first three episodes of my new podcast!
Case in point: comedian Eddie Pepitone talks with me about his frustration when he’s reaching for a pen on his bedside table and it falls to the ground. We also talk about when reading glasses fall. And cereal. Basically, those frustrating little experiences that we all have. And here’s where that gets interesting: what’s underneath Eddie’s frustration with this is his inherent belief that the world is divided into winners and losers and that he must be in the latter group if pens and glasses and continues to fall.
Then there’s Watch What Crappens co-host Ben Mandelker‘s annoyance when he’s at the gym and someone is singing or dancing. You know that guy/girl, right? Ugh. Now one might hear that Ben’s irritated by these pesky folks and conclude, “Well, who wouldn’t be?” True enough. But what we discovered is Ben’s own desire for the spotlight and his consequent jealousy of those people who aren’t afraid to grasp it.
And then we get to the lovely Emily Morse‘s issues with people who text her and ask her if she’s okay because she hasn’t responded to a previous text. Yes, the texter is being codependent. But why does this bother Emily? Well, when we dove deep, we got to the idea that she has fears around the fact that she’s constantly behind the 8-ball and a person asking her if she’s okay because they haven’t heard back from her triggers her belief that she’s always disappointing other people—and herself.
Just how did we get from here to there? You can find out on Monday, June 6th when these episodes are released. If you’re reading this before then, you can listen to Episode 0 and find out everything you want to know about the pod.
